You already own the room. Your job is to make sure everyone else eventually realizes it.
Old Money begins with $10B Net Worth, 2 Political Influence and 1 Media Influence, giving you the strongest financial head start in the game. Your advantage is patience: build an income-producing empire, quietly accumulate institutional access, and use your free Legal Shielding whenever your activities begin attracting scrutiny.
The Northeast is an especially strong opening Power Base. An opening capture of Washington, D.C. gives you +2 effective Political Influence because it is a Backbone Node. One use of Influence Institutions then puts you in range to unlock the Court Influence Network, which adds another +4 Political Influence. Wall Street is nearby for +$1B effective Net Worth, while NYC Media can supply +2 Media Influence for reputation management and concealment.
Your natural Throne Route is Institutional Capture. Prepare Institutional power at 8 Political Influence and push it to 12 for the final requirement. You must also remain tied for the highest Political Influence, keep State Capacity at 55 or higher, and retain either a functioning Influence node or active Court Influence Network.
The trick is not to destroy the system you are trying to own. Use stable income assets, keep Public Rage under control, and stabilize the country when necessary. Your opponents may build louder empires. Yours should become indispensable.
Optimal Priorities:
Washington, D.C. · Wall Street · Court Influence Network · diversified income · Legal Shielding
Natural Support Pillars:
Wealth · Territorial
Greatest Danger:
Allowing institutional decay and national instability to make Institutional Capture impossible
Build the systems everyone depends on. Then decide what reality looks like inside them.
Tech Empire is built for explosive information power. Platform and Tech assets cost you 1 less Asset Capital, making both the Data Platform and News Network unusually efficient purchases. A Data Platform normally costs 7 and provides +4 Media Influence and +1 Political Influence; your discount brings that acquisition to 6. A News Network falls from 6 to 5 and adds another +3 Media Influence and +1 Political Influence.
Start in California and Silicon Valley is the obvious prize: as a Backbone Tech node it provides +2 Media Influence while controlled. From there, the combination of Silicon Valley, Data Platform and News Network can turn even your modest starting Media Influence into a dominant information position.
That power has a purpose. Shadow Rule requires the Subterfuge pillar: prepare it at 8 Media Influence with Legal Exposure no higher than 30, then reach 12 Media Influence with Legal Exposure no higher than 20. You also need 8 Political Influence, the highest or tied-highest Media Influence, Information Integrity of 40 or lower, and a functioning News Network, Data Platform or Narrative node.
Shape Public Narrative becomes part of the engine rather than mere damage control. With functioning information infrastructure, the action can degrade national Information Integrity while improving your Public Opinion. Once your Media Influence rises, Conceal Activity becomes extremely strong: it removes 20 Legal Exposure at 5–9 effective Media Influence and 30 at 10+, for only 1 Asset Capital.
Your weakness is dependency. An asset placed Under Investigation stops providing its direct bonuses, and Tech Empire additionally loses income from investigated Platform or Tech assets. Protect the platforms that make you powerful, and never let your Legal Exposure creep above the Subterfuge ceiling just as you approach the throne.
Optimal Priorities:
Silicon Valley · Data Platform · News Network · Political Influence · Conceal Activity
Natural Support Pillars:
Institutional · Wealth
Greatest Danger:
Federal Investigation dismantling the platform engine at exactly the wrong moment
You don't need to buy the government from the outside. You already know where the doors are.
Political Dynasty begins at 3 Political Influence, the highest starting value of any Foundation, and reduces the cost of Influence Institutions by 1 Asset Capital—to a minimum of zero.
That creates one of the fastest power ramps in OBTRTA.
Choose the Northeast and take Washington, D.C. as your Round 1 Power Base capture. Its Backbone bonus immediately gives you +2 effective Political Influence. You can then still use your preserved Major Action to Influence Institutions. At your early influence tier, Political Dynasty can do that for 0 Asset Capital.
You now have enough effective Political Influence to unlock the Court Influence Network. That asset adds +4 Political Influence by itself. The result is a route that can reach the 8 Political Influence Institutional preparation threshold remarkably quickly and threaten the 12 Political Influence final threshold well before rivals expect a Control Claim.
But Political Dynasty pays for speed with scrutiny. If a Federal Investigation hits you, it adds 5 more Legal Exposure than normal. Court networks themselves also create significant systemic pressure. Your job is therefore not simply to race Political Influence upward; it is to arrive at 12 without letting the country collapse underneath you.
Institutional Capture still requires State Capacity 55+, Political Influence supremacy, and a functioning Court Influence Network or Influence node. Stabilize Society is often not a wasted turn for this strategy—it is what keeps your preferred endgame alive.
Greatest Priorities:
Washington, D.C. · Influence Institutions · Court Influence Network · State Capacity preservation
Natural Support Pillars:
Territorial · Wealth or Subterfuge
Greatest Danger:
Moving so quickly that investigations and institutional decay turn your own route off
You don't have to control what happens. You have to control what people believe happened.
Media Mogul starts with 3 Media Influence and +1 Public Opinion, and Shape Public Narrative is stronger in your hands: you gain 1 more Public Opinion than normal, up to a maximum gain of 3.
The Northeast offers one of the nastiest openings in the game. Capture NYC Media during your Round 1 Power Base opening and its Backbone status adds +2 Media Influence, immediately putting you at 5 effective Media Influence. At that tier, your Foundation bonus allows Shape Public Narrative to produce a +3 Public Opinion swing. And because NYC Media is a functioning Narrative node, the same action can begin degrading national Information Integrity. That is exactly where you want the country heading.
Your preferred endgame is Shadow Rule. Build toward 8 Media Influence / Legal Exposure ≤30 for preparation and 12 Media Influence / Legal Exposure ≤20 for the final Subterfuge threshold. You will also need at least 8 Political Influence, media supremacy, Information Integrity at 40 or below, and functioning information infrastructure.
Your high Media Influence is useful even when you are not shaping your own image. Destabilize Rivals can damage their Public Opinion, and at 3 Media Influence you can incite asset boycotts. Media also turns Conceal Activity into one of your strongest defensive tools.
The catch is that every Shape Public Narrative adds 2 Legal Exposure, and offensive destabilization adds more. Your empire thrives on information disorder, but your final Subterfuge requirement demands that you personally remain clean enough to exploit it.
Greatest Priorities:
NYC Media · News Network · Data Platform · Conceal Activity · Political Influence
Natural Support Pillars:
Institutional · Territorial
Greatest Danger:
Creating the perfect conditions for Shadow Rule while becoming too exposed to claim it
Build the infrastructure. Privatize the muscle. Wait for the state to become weaker than you are.
Industrial Titan begins with 2 Force Capacity and discounts Company and Infrastructure assets by 1 Asset Capital. That gives you an efficient economic base while you assemble the physical power required for Coercive Seizure.
The Southeast is an excellent Power Base. Norfolk Naval is a Backbone Force node worth +2 effective Force Capacity, and Fayetteville provides another Force node. That matters because a Coercive Seizure can satisfy its physical-infrastructure requirement with two functioning Force nodes even if you never acquire a Private Military Contractor.
Industrial Titan also gets especially good mileage from assets such as Logistics Network, which falls from 5 to 4 Asset Capital, and Private Prison Contract, which falls from 6 to 5 once unlocked and supplies +2 Political Influence and +2 Force Capacity. Political Influence matters because the Private Military Contractor requires 10 effective Political Influence and, once available, provides an enormous +4 Force Capacity.
The Coercive pillar prepares at 8 Force Capacity and reaches its Final requirement at 12. But unlike Institutional Capture, your desired national conditions are deterioration: State Capacity must be 40 or lower and Institutional Decay at least 50. You must also hold the highest or tied-highest Force Capacity.
Build Coercive Power can fill the remaining gaps, but every use adds +1 Force Capacity, -1 Public Opinion and +5 Legal Exposure. Suppress Threats is even harsher: it can crush Revolutionary Organization more efficiently as Force rises, but creates +5 Public Rage, +10 Legal Exposure and -1 Public Opinion.
You are not trying to keep America healthy. You are trying to make yourself the only actor capable of imposing order once it isn't.
Optimal Priorities:
Norfolk Naval · a second Force node · Logistics Network · Private Prison Contract · Private Military Contractor
Natural Support pillars:
Territorial · Institutional or Wealth
Greatest Danger:
Letting Revolutionary Organization and Public Rage become so severe that your seizure produces a country you cannot hold
Own what the country cannot function without, and let every other form of power grow out of it.
Energy Baron is less committed to one Throne Route than the other Foundations. That flexibility is the point.
Start in Texas and target the Permian Basin. Its Backbone Energy bonus gives +2 effective Political Influence, immediately complementing your starting 2 Political Influence. Because your Round 1 Power Base capture preserves your Major Action, you can then acquire Oil Extraction Rights immediately if you choose.
Your first Oil Extraction Rights costs 5 Asset Capital and produces 5 income once eligible. For Energy Baron, any National Update in which at least one Oil Extraction Rights produces income grants +1 additional Asset Capital total. That means a functioning first oil holding can effectively contribute 6 income for the update, translating into 6 Asset Capital and $600M of Net Worth growth.
Texas also naturally supports territorial concentration. Five controlled nodes establish 20% Land Control, which prepares the Territorial pillar and unlocks the Agricultural Monopoly. That asset costs 9, generates 5 income and adds +1 Political Influence. A second controlled region brings you to the 40% Territorial Final threshold. From there, decide what America has become.
If State Capacity remains high, your Energy-derived Political Influence can pivot toward Institutional Capture. If extraction, privatization and instability have helped drive State Capacity below 40 and Institutional Decay above 50, you can instead build Force and pursue Coercive Seizure. Wealth also becomes an obvious support pillar as the extraction engine compounds.
The danger is that the engine pollutes more than the environment. Oil acquisition raises Legal Exposure, Foreign Leverage and Central Bank Suspicion, and Oil Extraction Rights creates heavy Environmental Instability pressure over time. If an Energy Baron's Oil Extraction Rights is Boycotted, it loses its Core Variable bonus as well as its income.
You are powerful because everyone needs what you own. The game becomes surviving the moment they decide they hate you for it.
Optimal Priorities:
Permian Basin · Oil Extraction Rights · Texas Regional Control · Agricultural Monopoly · Political Influence
Natural Support Pillars:
Territorial · Wealth
Endgame Pivots:
Institutional Capture or Coercive Seizure
Greatest Danger:
Environmental crises, boycotts and systemic pressure turning your cash machine into a liability
